The Opportunity
Temple University’s Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) Lab takes a human-centered approach to using AI, NLP, and visualization to facilitate learning and empower non-experts to participate in work that has been previously reserved for trained professionals.
In 2023, the lab was looking to refresh its logo. Through a lab-wide voting process, I was lucky to have my logo proposal selected and continued to develop the lab’s visual brand identity, which did not exist before.
Lab Goals & Values
Project Examples
Before starting the design process, I made it a priority to understand the lab's core values. Two unique goals are Democratizing Design and Empowering Non-Experts. Their mission is deeply rooted in fostering community, sparking creativity, and supporting those who might not traditionally have access to design tools or expertise. This understanding became the foundation for creating a logo that not only represents the lab’s identity but also its commitment to inclusivity and collaboration.
Early Ideation
Here are some of my initial logo sketches, each reflecting different aspects of the lab's values. I found myself especially drawn to the fourth design—it just clicked for me. Sometimes, a certain idea just stands out!
Refining Concept
I developed a higher-fidelity version of the logo, refining the concept and deepening the connections between the design elements and the lab’s core identity. My focus was on creating a visual that truly embodies the lab’s mission and values.
Multi-Faceted & Dimensional
The lab encompasses many dimensions, including education, equity, and democratizing design, all working together to shape its mission.
Parts of a Whole, Completing the Puzzle
The Gestalt design concept highlights the idea that the whole is a sum of its parts—a multi-faceted puzzle that comes to life only when all the pieces work together.
Embracing Individuality
Just as HCI wouldn’t be complete without the “I” for “Interaction,” our community thrives on the unique contributions of each individual!
Typography, Color, & Stylesheet
I chose modern, versatile typography and a color palette that honors Temple University's iconic red, ensuring it works seamlessly across posters, presentations, and stickers.
